OKS Spezialschmierstoffe GmbH is an ECOPROFIT firm for 2004/2005

Separating waste, minimizing hazardous substances, and reducing emissions

Munich, November 2005 - Together with about 35 other companies and institutions in and around Munich, OKS Spezialschmierstoffe GmbH is an ECOPROFIT firm for 2004/2005. Based in Munich for more than 25 years, the company nowadays belongs to Freudenberg Chemical Specialities KG, also headquartered in Munich, and under the aegis of this program has done intensive work in continuously improving its corporate environmental protection capabilities.

"Thanks to our integrated management system, we can continually track, review and improve our performance in the fields of product safety, environmental protection and occupational safety", says Dr. Markus Leirer, Technical Director at OKS. "We attach great importance to minimizing the use of non-regenerative resources. The use of renewable raw materials and stringent quality management geared to enhanced efficiency for our products make a vital contribution here."

During 2005, OKS has channeled its investment primarily into improving waste separation and waste management. In addition, all toxic raw materials still being used for manufacturing products have been replaced by different, non-critical substances. And the company has dramatically reduced the emissions of solvents during the production process.

2006 will see additional projects launched, and ongoing ones completed. These include changing over to more eco-compatible, climate-friendlier propellants for certain products being sold in spray-cans.

"We have thus taken an important step forward", says Norbert Schiekl, General Manager of OKS Spezialschmierstoffe GmbH. "But this is no reason for resting on our laurels. Our aim is to achieve sustainable improvement in all factors upgrading our ecological performance while simultaneously assuring our high standards of product quality", he adds.

What is ECOPROFIT?

The ECOlogical PROject For Integrated Environmental Technology is a cooperative between local councils and private companies. It was developed in the Austrian city of Graz, and premiered for a German city in Munich as part of Agenda 21. Since 1998, 114 firms have participated in the Munich program, in six annual initiatives: the seventh will kick off at the beginning of 2006. More than 60 German cities and municipalities are meanwhile involved in ECOPROFIT. Agenda 21 is an action program developed under the aegis of the World Summit for Sustainable Development at Rio de Janeiro in 1992. The number 21 here indicates the 21st century.
