LUSIN CLEAN 1500 - a new purging compound for polycarbonate processing

Maisach, 1 Sep 2009 - Efficient cleaning of machine parts reduces scrap rates and decreases downtime.

Chem-Trend is introducing LUSIN CLEAN 1500, a new purging granulate concentrate for the thermoplastics industry which is free of abrasive components. LUSIN CLEAN 1500 was developed particularly for removal of problematic polycarbonate residues in screws, cylinders, nozzles and hot runner systems, which occur following the manufacture of polycarbonate products using injection moulding, extrusion and blow moulding procedures. The new purging compound saves manufacturers from using expensive and complex cleaning methods and thereby helps to avoid high scrap rates and production downtime.

Polycarbonate is initially a transparent plastic compound which, in addition, is particularly dimensionally stable and has a high impact resistance and rigidity. Polycarbonates are therefore used for the manufacture of components which rely precisely on these properties - for example headlight covers, spectacle lenses, aeroplane windows and other special panes, hard hats, visors as well as casings and packaging.

During the processing of polycarbonates, residue-free cleaning of machine parts is of significant importance for the quality of the moulded components. Without this, streaks can form during manufacture or carbon deposits can break away from the screw and cylinder walls, becoming visible as black specks on the products. Complete purging of the screws is not only crucial in the manufacture of coloured polycarbonate products, but also in the manufacture of transparent components. Here a simple change from a dark colour to a light colour can lead to increased scrap rates if the screw has not been completely cleaned.

"Using complex field studies under manufacturing conditions, Chem-Trend has been able to prove that LUSIN CLEAN 1500 increases plant efficiency, reduces scrap rates and decreases downtime", explains René Gräwe, Global Business Development Director for Thermoplastics at Chem-Trend. "In the mass production of products made from polycarbonate, six-figure amounts can quickly be saved in this manner."

LUSIN CLEAN 1500 is the latest addition to the LUSIN product family from Chem-Trend. Each product has been developed following careful analysis of the process conditions - a characteristic which distinguishes the research and development processes of Chem-Trend. Other recently introduced products of the LUSIN brand are LUSIN CLEAN G410, LUSIN CLEAN G315 and LUSIN PROTECT G31.
